How do I prepare for an employment law consultation?

If you believe that your employer has either subjected you to illegal behaviors or has failed to intervene as others have done so, you may be able to hold your employer accountable for the harm you have suffered by filing an appropriate claim with the courts. Although some wronged workers choose to represent themselves, most seek out the advice of an attorney experienced in related matters of employment law.

Choosing to work with an attorney who can advocate on your behalf can be an excellent option. However, the prospect of meeting with potential candidates can be daunting. After all, you want to make sure that your attorney’s approach is a good fit for you and your circumstances. Ensuring that you pick an attorney who will best fit your needs can be challenging, but is certainly not impossible.

Before you begin interviewing potential attorney candidates, consider drawing up a list of questions that you want to have each of them answer. These questions might include queries about fees, communication style, past experience and approach to cases like yours. It also doesn’t hurt to research attorney candidates online in order to get a sense of what their previous clients have to say about them and about what their educational and practical experience consists of.

Finally, it can be very helpful if you gather up all documentation relevant to your case for attorney candidates to look at. Each lawyer’s response to your story and your documentation may be slightly different. You may be able to get a good sense of who might “fit” you best based on these reactions.
