As a successful business owner, you have a team of staff behind you. While you take on your load of work, it would be impossible for you to do absolutely everything. Thus, you have a Human Resources (HR) department to help with certain aspects of the company.

But what does an HR department actually do? Outlined below are some of the key factors that any HR department should take care of.

Payroll issues

In California, there are many rules and regulations related to wages, working hours and rest breaks. While you need to know about this as a business owner, you should be able to delegate certain payroll responsibilities to your HR department.

They should ensure that employees are classified properly, given adequate rest breaks and vacation days, as well as being paid the correct wages. Any issues regarding wages should be directed to and cleared up by your HR department.

Safety requirements

A workplace can become unsafe in numerous different ways. If your company largely involves production and manual labor, then you’re going to need to ensure that equipment is all maintained and up to date. Employees will need to have access to suitable protective equipment and provisions should be made in case there is ever an accident.

For instance, do you have a first aider on shift at all times? All incidents also need to be logged for insurance purposes. Overseeing the safety policy of your company should be one of the core roles of your HR department.

An effective HR department can help your business to run smoothly. Issues with the HR department can end up causing you issues in terms of liability. If you are facing any kind of employment dispute, be sure to seek some legal guidance
